We were approached by an SME that manufactures musical instrument accessories that were facing significant challenges with bonding parts to the main body of their products.
The customer’s current process involved manually measuring and cutting sections from a roll of adhesive tape. In addition to being slow and imprecise, the tape was proving unsuitable due to the product’s low surface energy (LSE) materials. This led to corrective steps being introduced, as parts often needed to be reattached with a glue gun. The result was an inefficient and costly process, inconsistent product quality, and production delays that impacted operations.
The manufacturer was therefore seeking support from a bonding expert with deep expertise in material science and adhesive tape performance to address these challenges and streamline their application process.
Tecman began by utilising their in-house testing facility to analyse the customer’s current adhesive tape and substrates. By identifying why these materials were not bonding effectively, our team were able to specify the most suitable adhesive tape for bonding to the product’s LSE substrates.
While the tape was effective as a standalone solution, our engineers recommended using an adhesive promoter to further enhance bonding performance. The promoter alters the surface energy of the base material, significantly improving bond strength with minimal additional time.
Once the tape and adhesive promoter were applied, test results showed that the bond between the materials became so strong the product would break before the bond was compromised.
To further enhance the application process, we recommended die-cut parts presented on a roll, configured with finger-lift tabs for rapid and precise application. This solution significantly streamlined the process, improved bond strength, and enhanced the overall quality of the customer’s product.
The customer was delighted with the die-cut solution developed and manufactured by Tecman. It was significantly more effective than they thought possible and was delivered from start to finish in just a few months.
In addition to enhancing the overall performance of the product, our solution improved product quality, boosted confidence in the product, and reduced manufacturing time. Developing such a solution was only possible due to our added-value approach.
We are now collaborating with our customer to address other bonding challenges by identifying ineffective or time-consuming bonding solutions and developing more efficient alternatives. This partnership has delivered outstanding results, boosting our customers' production efficiency and providing a higher-quality product to their end users.
