Automotive NVH
Vehicle Interiors
The most significant source of noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) in automotive applications is typically the contact between a vehicle and the road surface. Road excitation defines the irritating white noise generated by the vehicle’s tyres at speed, but the performance of active suspension systems and the efficiency of insulating materials within the vehicular macrostructure are also contributing factors to the acoustic conditions within a vehicle’s cabin.
While road excitation may overwhelmingly contribute to the experience of automotive NVH, component noise must also be combatted to optimise the consumer experience.
This blog post will explore the automotive NVH products available from Tecman UK in more detail:
Automotive NVH Squeak and Rattle Prevention
Squeaking and rattling from components in a vehicle’s interior are typically described as random disturbances. These are often among the most irritating sources of automotive NVH for consumers, as constant and periodic sources of noise and vibration from the engine transmission or road excitation come to be expected. Intermittent noises from the dashboard, or the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) components embedded throughout the cabin must therefore be eliminated, or at least minimised.
Acoustic and thermal insulation materials are used throughout a vehicle’s cabin to reduce the generation of interior NVH. Automotive NVH pads are produced using a range of advanced materials, including high loft fleece, to control NVH throughout the vehicle interior, including insulation dash, boot linings, and other B surface NVH.
Tecman’s automotive NVH reduction materials include innovative ALFA® technology. Comprising a range of lightweight fleeces and felts, Tecman’s ALFA® Series is used extensively throughout vehicular interiors to comprehensively reduce most sources of rattling and squeaking.
Made from a very fine fibre non-woven polyester, ALFA® UL Series is a range of ultra-light acoustic and thermal insulation material which provides some of the best acoustic absorption. Flexurally laid, and made from hollow, grooved ultra-microfibre polyester and polypropylene, the material can conform to complex geometry components, reducing the number of parts needed in automotive production.
Rattling can also be generated by fixtures within the structure of the vehicle, such as the door panels and boot. ALFA® NP Series; a range of needle felt backed with high-strength adhesive, is widely used to fabricate anti-rattle pads for parcel shelves, boot linings, and door inserts.
Certain applications are not suitable for fleeces and felts, even those engineered to surpass automotive flame standards. Wire harnessing requires non-conductive tapes that can reliably bond loose electronics while meeting various international standards and certifications. We provide a robust range of automotive electronic tapes for discrete wire harnessing.
