Tackling Inefficient Paint-Masking Processes
1. The Challenge
A manufacturer in the construction supply chain, producing very large components, was experiencing long paint masking application times that significantly increased the labour costs of a project.
The customer was painting these large components with highly specialised paint, and their masking tape supplier was only able to offer standard width rolls. This made the process highly inefficient and time-consuming due to the need for multiple overlapping strips along the components. They contacted Tecman for a custom solution to reduce application time and associated costs.

2. The Solution
In order to offer a solution that optimised the process and delivered maximum savings, we visited the customer to observe the paint masking application process firsthand.
2.1 Selecting the right material
After observing the performance of their current masking tape, we recommended the customer switch to 22-CR02, our premium-grade crepe masking tape. This material proved ideal for their application due to its instant adhesion which boosted operator efficiency, and the excellent removability to ensure a residue-free surface, and robust solvent resistance. Importantly, 22-CR02 also provided cost savings for the customer without any compromise on performance.
2.2 Developing a Time-Saving Paint Masking Solution
This on-site understanding was crucial in identifying how the use of standard width tape was contributing to the lengthy application times. Combined with our expertise in paint masking components and processes, this provided valuable insights into how application time could be reduced with customised products. We were able to quickly propose replacing the current product with two masking tape formats with bespoke widths, specifically designed around the customer’s application.

The customer achieved a 43% reduction in paint masking application time and associated labour costs. Combined with the switch to a more cost-effective high performance masking tape, we were able to help them significantly boost profitability on this project.
Since this project, we have continued to collaborate with the customer on further projects, delivering consistent cost savings and contributing tangible added-value with our customised components.
